Artist Statement
My goal is simple. When people look at my quilts, I'd like them to be transported to a happier place...or at the very least, I'd like them to smile.
The shapes, textures, movements, highlights and shadows of the natural world continually inspire me. From my nothwoods studio, I strive to create quilts that literally burst with the fresh hues of woodlands, lakeshores and natural gardens.
I always use hand dyed fabric - mostly cotton, but some silks - and embellish it with acrylic paints, colored pencils, watercolors and even markers. Finally, I add detail with thread...lots of it.
And a few last words about quilts...They should be touched. Their texture should comfort and awaken your senses. Their lines, shapes and colors should stimulate.
Biography
Gail Gilson Pierce holds a bachelor of science degree in biology with emphasis in environmental education. She worked as a professional field biologist and educator while producing art "on the side" from 1982 to 2007. Then she took a "leap of faith" becoming a full-time professional studio artist and co-owner of a textile production and design company.
Gail realized early on that in order to transfer the images she observed in nature to her quilts, she needed to first learn good technique and second, to break all the rules. By studying with internationally recognized fiber artists she has constantly worked to enhance both her skill and artistry.
She has been a featured artist at Fine Line Designs Gallery in Door County, WI. Her award-winning work has been in national and international competitions, and is part of private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe and Asia.
